Dermal fillers are used for facial aesthetic treatments and are injected into the skin. Dermal fillers are based on Hyaluronic acid which is a substance that naturally exists in your body.
Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule that exists naturally in almost all living organisms. It binds water and can act as a lubricant and shock absorber in movable parts of the body such as joints. It is also important for the transport of nutrients and in regulating water balance in skin.
Dermal fillers work by boosting the skin’s supply of hyaluronic acid, dermal fillers revitalise and add volume to the skin, instantly diminishing the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and giving a natural softer look. Dermal fillers are a soft injectable gel consisting of stabilized, non-animal hyaluronic acid. The gel is tissue-friendly and closely resembles the hyaluronic acid that exists naturally in the body. It is long-lasting but not permanent.
Dermal filler injections provide an easy way to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, smooth the skin and give a more youthful appearance. The result of a single treatment can be seen instantly and can last for around 6 to 9 months. Dermal filler injections can give a natural looking result that does not affect facial expression. Post Care
Cheek filler is a low-risk procedure that needs very little recovery time.
- Drink plenty of water
- Avoid strenuous exercise as this can increase blood pressure which can exacerbate bruising and swelling
- Avoid alcohol consumption for at least 24 hours
- Avoid massaging or putting excessive pressure on the treatment area for two weeks
- No facials or facial massages for two weeks
- Avoid touching the injected area for 24 hours. However, you may gently cleanse your face that evening
- Avoid extended exposure to sun or UV light for at least one week
- Arnica or paw paw cream can be used post-treatment to help reduce bruising
- Avoid long-haul travel for one month
- No make-up immediately after and for up to 6 hours.
IMPORTANT TO NOTE WITH DERMAL FILLERS
- Please be aware of signs of vascular occlusion, including immediate blanching of the skin (paleness, tissue turns white). The skin may become dusky or discoloured with a bluish tint with fine reticulations (lace-like pattern). This can often occur away from the actual injection site and is often associated with pain. If this occurs, please contact us immediately and DO NOT DELAY. If the clinic is closed, then please get in touch with your local Hospital Emergency department ASAP
- If you have a history of cold sores, then we advise taking anti-viral medication prior to the treatment
- Avoid wearing swimming goggles if you have cheek or tear trough fillers for two weeks
- Lumps under the skin are regular post-treatment and can be assessed during your follow-up appointment.

What to Expect:
- Most side effects are mild to moderate in nature, and their duration, pain/ tenderness is short lasting (7 days or less)
- The most common side effects include, but are not limited to,temporary injection site reactions, such as redness, pain/tenderness, firmness, swelling, lumps/ bumps, bruising, itching and discolouration. As with all skin injection procedures, there is a risk of infection
- Hyaluronic acid fillers are generally biocompatible, which means allergy skin testing is not required before treatment.
